What is Hawaii Time?

Hawaii Standard Time (HST) is UTC−10 every day of the year. Hawaii does not observe daylight saving time — sitting near the tropics, its day length barely changes with the seasons, so there is little daylight to "save".

Because Hawaii's clock never moves while the mainland's does, every difference to a DST-observing zone shifts by an hour twice a year. Against Eastern Time, Hawaii is 5 hours behind in winter (HST vs EST) but 6 hours behind from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November (HST vs EDT). The same one-hour drift applies to Central, Mountain, Pacific, and Alaska Time.

Central4–5 h ahead+4 / +5 h
Mountain3–4 h ahead+3 / +4 h
Pacific2–3 h ahead+2 / +3 h
Alaska1–2 h ahead+1 / +2 h

In each pair the smaller gap applies in winter, when the mainland is on standard time, and the larger gap in summer, when the mainland is on daylight time.

Where Hawaii Time applies

Only one state keeps HST year-round: Hawaii, across all its islands from Kauai to the Big Island.

The zone is officially the Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone: the far western Aleutian Islands of Alaska (west of 169°30′ W) share the UTC−10 standard offset but, unlike Hawaii, they do observe daylight saving time, running an hour ahead of Honolulu each summer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hawaii observe daylight saving time?

No. Hawaii stays on HST (UTC−10) all year and has never observed DST since the Uniform Time Act took effect in 1967. Details on the DST page.

How far behind New York is Hawaii?

5 hours in winter and 6 hours in summer — Hawaii's clock never moves, so the gap changes when the mainland switches. See the HST to EST chart.

Is Hawaii in the same time zone as the Aleutian Islands?

They share the Hawaii–Aleutian zone (UTC−10 standard), but the Aleutians west of 169°30′ W observe DST, so they run an hour ahead of Honolulu in summer.
