Nearly all of Alaska — including Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau — observes Alaska Time: AKST (UTC−9) in winter and AKDT (UTC−8) in summer. Only the Aleutian Islands west of longitude 169°30′ W keep Hawaii–Aleutian Time (UTC−10), one hour further back.
It wasn't always this simple: until 1983 the state stretched across four time zones. That year Alaska consolidated onto the new Alaska Time so communities from Ketchikan to Nome could share a clock. Unlike Hawaii, the Aleutian portion of the Hawaii–Aleutian zone does observe daylight saving.
