Michigan's time zones

Nearly all of Michigan observes Eastern Time (EST, UTC−5; EDT, UTC−4 in summer) under the IANA zone America/Detroit. The exception is four Upper Peninsula counties along the Wisconsin border — Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee — which keep Central Time so their clocks match neighboring Wisconsin.

That places Ironwood, Iron Mountain, and Menominee an hour behind Detroit, Grand Rapids, and the rest of the state. Michigan also has an unusual daylight saving record: it opted out of DST in 1968 and stayed on standard time until voters restored the clock change in a 1972 statewide referendum. Sitting on the western edge of Eastern Time gives the state notably late summer evenings — Detroit's June sunsets come after 9:00 PM.
