Henderson lies in Clark County in the southeastern Las Vegas Valley and is Nevada's second most populous city after Las Vegas itself.
The city grew out of the Basic Magnesium Plant, a federal facility built in the early 1940s that supplied magnesium for World War II incendiaries and aircraft parts; the plant's wartime shifts ran continuously on the Pacific clock, and its worker housing became the town that incorporated in 1953.
Henderson sits closer to the Arizona line than any other large Nevada city, and because Arizona holds Mountain Standard Time year-round, the hour gap at that border exists only in winter — from March to November the two sides read the same.
